Objectives

Based on up-to-date scientific investigations on learning and on the working of the human brain the partners in this project wanted to ...

  • ... get to know and to share best practice in the partner countries by systematic scientifically based observation of classroom teaching and interviews of teachers, pupils, and parents,

  • ... compare and reflect upon the results and to evaluate them taking into account the specific situation in each country,

  • ... especially find out and describe the factors, which influence individualised learning in mixed ability groups positively or negatively,

  • ... evaluate the effect of individualised learning on the acquisition of curricular and social competences.

The objectives of the project were essentially attached to the target group of teachers and headmasters in schools, as well as their trainers at universities, seminaries and institutes for in-service training.

Observations

Observations were supposed to concentrate on such questions as:

  • What kind of school culture supports individualised learning
    best?

  • Is there a repercussion of results of performance tests
    on classroom teaching?

  • What kind of self-concept dominates the interaction between school
    authorities: teachers, parents and students?

A comparative analysis was supposed to become the basis for developing qualifications of teachers in such areas as: diagnostic competence, knowledge about reliable ways to self-guided learning, appropriate teaching methods for individualised learning, support for migrant students, process-oriented assessment.

Steps

For this purpose the following steps were taken by the partners in this project:

  • ... to develop, to test and to evaluate courses/modules (plus material) on individualised learning on the basis of the mentioned investigation,

  • ... to produce, test and evaluate a video documentation on individualised learning in each of the partner countries,

  • ... to disseminate the results in various ways (internet, courses, conferences, scientific magazines, film and book publication), to contribute to the political effort of strengthening the aims of inclusion, autonomy of the learning individual and social cohesion in a multicultural Europe,

  • ... to make politicians, parents and other important target groups in society aware of the educational and learning potential of mixed-ability groups.

  • ... to make politicians, parents and other important target groups in society aware of the educational and learning potential of mixed-ability groups.
